Prof. Dr. Heinz Geuen

Prof. Dr. Heinz Geuen, born 1954 in Mönchengladbach, was appointed to a professorship in music education and teaching at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in 2002. He was dean of the department music education between 2007 and 2009. Then, he became Prorektor für Studium, Lehre und Forschung (Vice-President for academic affairs, teaching and research). Since 2013, he is Rektor (President) of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

Heinz Geuen studied music education at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover as well as political science, sociology and French philology at Leibniz university of Hannover. He worked as a teacher for grammar schools in Niedersachsen and Hessen and became an academic officer at the university of Kassel. In 1996, he did his doctorate on the subject of Kurt Weill’s music theatre concepts.

The main focus of Prof. Dr. Geuen’s scientific work is music didactics and teacher training, as well as musicological and media studies with intersections to music education. He published scientific studies in the field of music education, didactics and in the field of historical musicology, popular music and media, as well as regarding the quality management at universities of music.

Dr. Heike Sauer

Organisational Director

Heike Sauer studied musicology, history and communication science at the University of Münster. After graduation, she completed a PhD in musicology and started work in public relations and orchestra management for the North Rhine – Westphalia Youth Orchestra. In 1999, she became a press officer at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Soon after, she was promoted Director of the Department for PR and Event Organisation. Later she took her current position as Director of the Department for Communication and Fundraising. In this capacity, she is also responsible for the overseeing the organisation of the International Music Competition Cologne.

Alongside her work at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, she has, for many years now, been involved in arts and music programmes for youth outreach. She chairs the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Musik NRW e.V. (LAG Musik) and is deputy chair of the Kulturelle Jugendarbeit NRW (LKJ). She was also chair of Jeunesses Musicales NRW e.V. before stepping down on account of various other commitments. (She now supports that organisation as its vice president.) Additionally, she is deputy chair of the Board of Trustees of the Kunsthaus Rhenania in Cologne.
