The prize winners

The pianists Philipp Scheucher and Georgy Voylochnikov and the singer Theodore Browne are this year’s first prize winners of the International Music Competition Cologne

There was a thrilling atmosphere in the concert hall during the last two days of this year’s International Musik Competition at our Hochschule für Musik und Tanz. From September 18 to 28, the performances of all participants were close together.

In the category for piano the first prize was split and awarded to both, the young, 21 year old, Austrian Philipp Scheucher and the Russian Georgy Voylochnikov.
Scheucher convinced the Jury with Beethoven’s piano concert No. 2, Voylochnikov with the piano concert No. 3 of Béla Bartók. Georgy Voylochnikov additionally won the audience prize, whereas Philipp Scheucher was glad about winning the prize of the Freunde junger Musiker KölnBonn e.V. The second prize was awarded to Mishka Momen from Great Britain, the third prize to the Japanese Yoshito Numasawa.
In the category singing the young, 21 years old, British Theodore Browne won three prizes. He won the first prize of the competition, the audience prize and the prize of the Freunde Junger Musiker KölnBonn e.V. Coline Dutilleul from Belgium was awarded with the second prize and the prize of the WDR Funkhausorchester, including a recording with the orchester. The third prize was split and awarded to the Koreans Won Kim and Taejun Sun.

Junge Talente treffen aufeinander

Acht TeilnehmerInnen sind im Finale des Internationalen Musikwettbewerbs Köln

Sie haben es geschafft: Acht TeilnehmerInnen des Internationalen Musikwettbewerbs Köln dürfen nun in den Finalrunden Klavier (Donnerstag, 25.09. ab 19.00 Uhr) und Gesang (Freitag, 26.09. ab 19.00 Uhr) mit dem WDR Funkhausorchester unter der Leitung des jungen Dirigenten Alexander Prior um die Preise wetteifern. Sie haben sich gegen Ihre Konkurrenten aus 18 Ländern der Welt erfolgreich in den ersten zwei Runden des Wettbewerbs durchgesetzt und die internationale Jury von ihrem Können überzeugt.Der 1992 in London geborene Dirigent Alexander Prior benötigt viel Einfühlungsvermögen, um die ihm bis dahin unbekannten jungen Pianistinnen und Pianisten, Sängerinnen und Sänger in der letzten Wettbewerbsrunde zu begleiten. Für die Teilnehmer ist es nämlich eine große Herausforderung mit dem Funkhausorchester des WDR in großen Konzertsaal der Hochschule ihr Programm zu präsentieren. Liest man die Biographie des sehr jungen Dirigenten kann man Einiges erwarten. Alexander Prior absolvierte mit 17 Jahren die Dirigenten-Ausbildung mit Auszeichnung in St. Petersburg, er dirigierte als 18jähriger die Uraufführung seiner Sinfonie Nr. 6, dirigierte beim Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Kanada und im Wiener Konzerthaus. Nun trifft dieses große Talent auf die acht Finalisten des Wettbewerbs:

Die Finalrunden beginnen jeweils um 19.00 Uhr und sind öffentlich. Der Eintritt beträgt 6,-- / erm. 4,-- Euro. Am Ende der jeweiligen Finalrunde kann das Publikum einen Teilnehmer mit einem Publikumspreis auszeichnen.

 

International Music Competition Cologne 2014

Sept. 18 to 28, 2014 at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln

This year, the International Music Competition Cologne will take place for the second time and will include the categories vocals and piano. The jury selected amongst more than 130 applicants and invited 30 pianists and vocal artists each. The contestants will compete in several rounds at our campus in Cologne and Aachen. 

Facts and figures

The competition’s internationality is reflected in its participants coming from 17 different countries. Besides Japan, Germany and Great Britain, they come from China, Russia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Ukraine, Italy, Romania, South Korea, South Africa, France, Iran, USA and Turkey. The youngest participant is 16 years old and comes from Ukraine. 

The opening concert will be in the concert hall of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne on September 18th, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the first prize winners of the last competition in 2011, Hansung Yoo (vocals) and Mayumi Sakamoto (piano). The first round of this year’s competition will start on Friday, 19th September, 2014 for piano at our campus in Aachen and for vocals in Cologne.

The final rounds will take place on Thursday, 25th and Friday, 26th September at 7 p.m. in the concert hall of the Hochschule in Cologne and will be accompanied by the WDR Funkhausorchester conducted by the young conductor Alexander Prior

Prizes

This year’s total amount of prizes is 32,500 euros, for main prizes and special prizes. The auditorium may also award one prize per category in the final round. The prize winners will get subsequent engagements, as well as a recording together with the WDR Funkhausorchester.

Prize winners’ concerts

The concert of the 2nd and 3rd prize winner will take place on Saturday, 27th September, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, 28th September, 2014 the audience may be convinced by the quality of the first prize winners in the concert at the WDR Funkhaus am Wallraffplatz, starting at 11 a.m. This concert will be held together with the WDR Funkhausorchester and will be recorded and broadcasted the following day.
